Community Service Projects

The sixth grade class takes on the responsibility of the school’s recycling program. Each Friday the students collect a recycling bin from an assigned area in the building. The bins are brought back to our room, consolidated into empty bins, and brought out to the shed. Two students also collect all the plastic bottles and containers from the four receptacles located throughout the building, and bring this bag out to the shed. The Cycz, Kinsman, and Smith families take turns taking all that the students collect to the Whately Transfer Station on a weekly basis. Without the help of these families the recycling program would be in jeopardy. We recently visited the UMASS Recycling Center to see recycling on a much larger scale and learn about many products that can be made from recycled materials.

We are also participating in the Scholastic Classrooms that Care project. We are attempting to read 100 books by December 31, 2006. If we meet this goal Scholastic will donate 100 books to kids in need through their literacy partners. We have a poster in the room we are keeping track of the books read with. Books read aloud, read at home, or read at school all count toward our goal. To learn more about Scholastic Book Clubs’ Classroom Care you can visit www.Scholastic.com/ClassroomsCare.
